The Awakening River was written for the Wellington Youth Choir for their 2024 concert entitled Huakina, a celebration of wāhine, nonbinary and irawhiti choral composers from Wellington and around the motu. Meaning 'to open', Huakina is designed to uplift and make space for new and experienced non-male composers and to showcase their work to a brand new audience.
The text is a poem by Katherine Mansfield called The Awakening River which depicts a sensual awakening of a river to the sun's embrace. The spirit of the text is encapsulated in the exuberant melodic and harmonic lines carrying the listener through a lush sonic journey.
