About
Church Sunday is the first of four pieces in a set commissioned by Brent Read, tenor. The poem by Kathleen Hawkins is sometimes sentimental, often moving — and long. The song takes over nine minutes to perform, and requires considerable strength from the singer, a good narrative sense, and the ability to maintain the music's specific atmosphere. Like each of the songs in this set, the pianist plays an equal role with the singer.
