This piece hints of Russian music at its most brooding, reflective and passionate. Only the brief fiery middle section moves away from the almost funereal pace. You can imagine Rachmaninoff in his later years rising from his bed, cigarette in a long holder, waiting, half-awake, for his first morning coffee to arrive. Or you can ignore that picture and let the music speak for itself.
This piece wasn't originally part of the 1st Suite, but because of its title has been joined with the other similarly-named solos.
