About
The impermanence of life has been reflected as the Covid-19 affected human life. The composer experienced this complete lockdown from February to July in China; this is significant changes unseen in a century. The city Wu Han was blocked in one night in February; ten million people lived in the unknown and fear, hospitals were full of patients and a depressive atmosphere. Hope is what people desperately desire.
Phoenix(凤凰) stands for peace and love in Chinese culture; it experienced the torment of fire, and finally, ushered in nirvana and rebirth. The two clarinets represent a pair of phoenixes; they suffered a long period of directionless and hopeless, where is the beginning of the piece. After a short hurried preparation, they finally rush into the sea of fire boldly and spread flame wings to soar; fear and disease are eliminated, hope and freedom are regained. Finally, a pair of phoenixes reborn where is the last section of the piece; they are ready to back home to bring peace and hope to the people.
