About

The Immoralist is my second piece which based on the works of French author André Gide, following The Narrow Door. Both literary works delve deeply into the exploration of true human nature; this is inseparable from Gide's own highly contradictory character, whose thoughts and feelings are not easily resonated with by the majority. This French writer was overlooked by literary critics for a long time. I can instantly understand the intention and motivation behind each of his words; it is partly fate, and partly because I see so much of myself in him. We are both willing to introspect deeply; in other words, we are both the immoralists within the narrow door.

Contents note

The compositional method I employ is called the Han-Yin Method, (瀚音法) which I self-created at the end of 2022. Han-Yin method is an interdisciplinary study of Microtones, Mandarin and Literature, combining 26 letters and 24 microtones. Based on this method, every letter matches its specific pitch. Following this method, the six key characters I selected from the book——“我”(Wǒ), “背”( bèi) , “德” ( dé) , “者”( zhě) , “自 ”( zì) and “由 ”( yóu) have formed with eight pitches and two Buff note( letter Y and Z—Fermata). These eight pitches have generated their own mode, harmony, and colours.
