Red Poppies: Conflict and Sorrow - WW2

About
This music was written in response to the composer's father's account of his experiences in World War Two. "Conflict" is very edgy and describes the anxiety felt of imminent danger. The viola part explores the full range of the Viola with double stops, ricochet and expressive melody. "Sorrow" is the aftermath of battle and expresses a deep sense of loss and grief of losing men and friends. A four bar theme develops with variations and builds to a point of extreme emotion before returning to the theme.
This music was awarded 2nd equal in the ANZVS Composition competition 2017
