About

This work was written in early 2010 and premiered at Pataka art gallery in Porirua as part of the Sunday concert series. It has been described as 'An engaging duet for flute and piano' - The Manawatu Standard. The work is loosely a theme and variations, with 'transformations' in order to allow more freedom in the form and structure. The theme is based around a descending chord progression which is heard initially as a rustling tremolo in the piano underneath plaintive flute tones. An episode of birdsong is heard from the flute as the music develops away from the initial thematic material and a stormy climax ensues. The piece ends with the theme ascending in reverse and then finally fades away somewhat more peacefully.
