About

The opening of Swamp Dance was written in a minimalist style, with ideas systematically built around a repeated descending 5th in the
cello. The piece later uses more conventional melodic ideas, which are folk-like and influenced by Bartok's 'Hungarian Sketches', though the
rhythmic quality and the pizzicato of the opening section are maintained, giving the piece a slightly mechanical sound throughout. Overall the rhythmic and chordal ideas in the piece predominate over the melodic material, which is somewhat elusive. Changing time signatures provide a feeling of intrigue and instability. Swamp Dance received its first performance at the 2009 Nelson
Composers Workshop in July.
