About
Scherz-esque is a duet for two Bb Clarinets. A take on the Scherzo for two instruments treated as an open forum to the listener on the nature and exploration of ‘conversation’ in music. The work was written in August 2018, taking a thread from an old University paper during my Honours year on the idea of ‘conversation’ in classical music in the string quartet genre.
I wanted to explore a semi-dramatic (mostly melodramatic) work in which the two soloists are forced to ‘communicate’ over shared musical dialogue. The score is littered with prompts over the shape of the musical, discussion and it is up to the players to bring out the drama, comedy and (any) seriousness in the piece.
