About

In Norse Mythology, there are the Nornir. Three ancient deities who are responsible for shaping the course of human destinies. Legend attests that they would visit a child at birth, and through benevolence or malevolence, shape the child’s future. This idea has always fascinated me, and with the nature of the Covid pandemic and the 2020 lockdowns in New Zealand, we have been living through troubling times; and for me that draws the question of fate into discussion.

Dedicated to the 2021 inaugural concert for the Wairua Sinfonietta, and to Elizabeth Lau, I wanted to write a piece that tackled the idea of fate, of beginning and ends, and the journey in-between. There are multiple melodies, different fates if you will, weaving through this work and as they interact, they tell a story of both the troubles and tribulations of our recent history and of our resolution for a better future. We all have a story, a weave, a fate; and this is mine.
