In this piece, I wanted to explore a more fluid melodic line, whose development and trajectory was achieved over near-continuous passages to create a languid sense of movement. The title, ‘Ancients’, simply refers to something old; something almost lost to time but kept alive through story and heritage. I wanted the opening to be a reasonably intervallically sparse exploration of the flute’s lower, breathier, more ‘wooden’ register, before taking it to new places.
