The stimulus for the piece was three-fold (coincidentally): ... attending a house concert of music for two pianos where there was also a third piano (an upright), not used in the concert, and situated in an adjoining space, each room being audible from the other and visible (at least partially) through internal windows ... hearing again Charles Ives's The Unanswered Question, with its distinct instrumental groupings, each with their own musical motifs ... hearing again, and studying the score of Leonard Bernstein's The Age of Anxiety (Symphony no.2), especially the use of an off-stage slightly out-of-tune 'pianino' in the 'Masque' section: a reworking of the 'pianino' motif recurs in the 3rd piano part here.
Ideally the third piano should be positioned at a remove from the other two, as it is they who form the principal duo.
