The Thing is loosely based around one of my first ever compositions. The Thing once had an actual title. The Thing once had a narrative and a programme note. Things change. I'm hopeful that, by stripping The Thing of these things, the remaining Thing will be less of a "predictable" thing, and more of a "whatever thing the keen thinker thinks the thing to be" kind-of thing.
