About
Aeroplanes Over Aotearoa was written in 2015, and was a winning work in NZTrio's inaugural composition contest, "Celebrating Lilburn". Douglas Lilburn (1915-2001) devoted the first period of his compositional career to finding a unique musical voice for New Zealand. Almost all his works during this period were inspired by the landscapes, nature and people of his home country. However, during this period, Lilburn almost certainly hadn’t seen New Zealand from above. By the time commercial aviation became common in New Zealand, Lilburn had shifted his focus to internationalism, serialism and, later, electronic music.
Aeroplanes Over Aotearoa ponders what Lilburn may have written if, during his nationalistic period of composition, he had been inspired by an aerial view of his home country.
