Nocturnes is the sixth piece in the cycle Travels with Alex for viola obbligato and various chamber ensembles.

The score bears the following inscription: 'In order to escape detection, much of the journey of Alex and Yongden from the border to Lhasa takes place of necessity under cover of darkness.'
