Three Poems of Oscar Wilde for baritone solo is a setting of three of the 19th century author’s poems - ‘Le Jardin’, ‘La Mer’ and ‘Requiescat’. While composing the work I tried to as best I could immerse myself in the vivid imagery of the poems, in order to best express their typically romantic sense of pathos. This quality is particularly evident in the freely chromatic melodic treatment of the melody in the settings of ‘La Mer’ and ‘Requiescat’.
The setting of ‘Le Jardin’ is based upon a setting of the poem for baritone and piano composed in October 2017, and subsequently arranged for baritone solo in October 2018 at the time of setting the other two poems in Xinzheng, Henan, China.
