About
Three Ink-wash Landscapes for 25-note toy piano take their cue from the Chinese ink-wash painting technique. They (apart from a few chromatic inflections in the third piece) restrict themselves solely to the white notes of the two-octave toy piano. The simplicity of the musical language, along with subtle gradations in colour, combine to create the work's austere kind of beauty.
The third piece, 'Earth Song', was written at the time of the bushfire emergency in Australia in January 2020. While not directly commenting on that event, it carries a wish for a more compassionate and caring approach towards our mother, the earth we all call home.
The composition of Three Ink-wash Landscapes was commenced in Xinzheng, Henan, China at the end of November 2019, directly after I returned from the first Toy Music Festival held at Sharon Hall, Seoul, and completed on January 6th 2020. They are dedicated to the festival's director Mee Young Kim, and the Toy Music Festival, Seoul.
