About

Becoming somewhat obsessed by a line I read from Tolstoy’s The Death of Ivan Ilyich, “When I am not, what will there be?” Intangible Echoes continues developing a theme I wrote for voice and classical guitar based on Tolstoy’s text. Used as a starting point only, the original theme morphs into unexpected territory as new themes emerge, leaving only echoes of the original. At the outset, I wanted to use amplification and digital FX in this piece and the unusual, yet wonderfully colourful collection of instruments that comprise the OCT Ensemble were for me the perfect canvas to experiment with. I was particularly interested in how delay effects applied to single notes or small collections of notes and allowing plenty of space between can create unexpected textures, harmonies and somewhat Intangible Echoes.
