Our Youngest Star was commissioned for the Glamaphones, based in Wellington, for their Matariki concert. This piece is an ode to Hiwa-i-te-rangi, the youngest of the nine stars of Matariki and the carrier of wishes. People would look to her to as they approached the new year, with dreams and wishes in mind. Hiwa-i-te-rangi is a beacon of hope for times to come, and in her hands she carries seeds, "growing into thought, moving into the world of life and light - Te Ao Marāma."
With this commission came the incredible opportunity to work with a living Aotearoa poet, Stacey Teague. Her incredible kupu were further amplified by sentiments gathered from the choir itself, further empowering the text. Having such a vivid and personal set of words to set was an incredible experience, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to share in this haerenga with them.
Much aroha to Glamaphones, their director Rachel Hyde, and Fionn McKenzie for their aroha and guidance as this piece was crafted.
