About

For me, the one silver lining to the seemingly endless Covid-19 lockdowns in Germany was the unexpected opportunity to get back into composing. The world was at a literal standstill, so there was nowhere to go other than inward — for me, at least. The very act of composing became a kind of antidote to the strangeness of the world and reawakened an urge to create. Henry Wong Doe’s invitation to write a piece for Perspectives felt wonderfully timed, like a kind of landing point after those two most extraordinary years. Emic is essentially a reflection of those times, seen from the inside out. I’m very thankful for Henry’s invitation and Creative New Zealand for funding the project.
