As-salamu alaykum (Peace be upon you) is dedicated to the victims of the mosque shootings in Christchurch, New Zealand, March 15, 2019. It is a reflection on what it means to be at peace with other people, and to enjoy a spiritual life. In the wake of the shootings New Zealanders have not only had to reflect on the nature of racism and hatred but also on the beauty and humanity of Islamic faith. We are learning to better to appreciate difference, whether it is through donning the hijab or listening to the Adhan, or call to prayer. This piece references elements of the call to prayer alongside western musical elements to represent a peaceful coming together of cultures.
