About
Rakiura Lights was inspired by long summer sunsets on Rakiura (Stewart Island), at the southern end of Aotearoa, New Zealand. The composer enjoyed a holiday there in 2021, which proved inspirational for this piece. Rakiura is also known for its dark sky and wonderful views of the night sky and occasional auroras, or 'Southern Lights'. A bird call, which the composer heard on Rakiura, also makes an appearance at the start. It contrasts with a chorale-like melody that is human in character. The more active middle section is a reflection on the sea, and the impact it has had on the people of Rakiura.
