About
This set of three short pieces was written after I had seen an exhibition of paintings by the late 18th - early 19th century English painter, John Constable The exhibition, at the National Gallery in Canberra, featured many of Constable's large works, but also a striking set of cloud studies. Constable was the son of a corn merchant and mill owner and learnt to read the many moods of the sky.
Some of the Constable's cloud paintings name the time of day a painting was recorded, and in one afternoon several paintings might show the movement of cloud patterns and the constant changing of the sky, viewed from one location.
The three musical cloud studies are texture studies which try to capture this idea of change within a fixed frame by using one chord series which permeates, but changes within, each short piece.
