About
three reflections aims to evoke a poignant space that encourages the listener, or performer, to reflect on how they can extend kotahitanga in their community. This work prioritises music’s universality and its ability to transcend language, racial and ethnic barriers.
The accompanying recording provides an opportunity to simply listen and reflect, to learn the piece by ear, or to play or sing along with the music. The recording is just one interpretation of the notated material. Performers should feel free to interpret the music however feels right to them. The arrangement can also be expanded, for example, a third voice part could be added, and a guitar could improvise alongside the piano.
This piece can be performed by any number of musicians, from a single performer who plays the piano and sings, through to a large group. Lower voices can sing the voice parts down an octave, upper voices sing as written. The second voice part is optional.
The third movement ends in an improvisatory section where vocalists are encouraged to improvise in a way that feels meaningful to them.
