About
Sonata for Viola was composed in late July to August of 2019, and later revised in 2020. As a composer, I have always been inspired by the implicit drama within a form, especially the sonata-allegro form, which I am familiar with throughout my learning of various piano sonatas.
Sonata for Viola deconstructs the traditional Sonata-Allegro form and re-frames it with timbres; achieved via extended technique; supported by loosely-applied key centres.
The work is dedicated to talented violinist and good colleague Annabelle Thorpe, who premiered it at Victoria University’s “Lilburn Trust Composer’s Competition Finals 2019”.
