No. 2 from Trowell's Two Heine Songs, Op. 50 (see also 'Nacht leigt auf den fremden Wegen'), 'Nacht leigt auf den fremden Wegen' ('On the Silent Highway') is based on poetry by the 19th Century German poet Heinrich Heine, and dedicated to Madame Blanche Marchesi (1863–1940), a French mezzo-soprano with whom Trowell gave several concerts. Trowell gave a volume of Heine poetry to Katherine Mansfield.
