About
Ūkaipō
- (noun) mother, source of sustenance.
- (noun) origin, real home.
Ūkaipō’ is a celebration of identity and the origins of life. For me, the source is love.
It has never been more relevant than in the events we face today and many of us are moving forward, with love, toward new capacities for imagining, voicing, connecting, and uplifting oneself, others and our planet, mother earth.
Even in the most heartless of places, we can be encouraged and supported to heal and restore. I know this well. Once held by the long-standing impact of oppression that touches the lives of so many people across the world, I began to build a kind of power that had been denied me.
Reclaiming that power required an exploration of origin and reconnection to land, culture, whakapapa and history. Guided by my ancestors, I found home in every sense of the word.
I hope you can hear, in the song, the promise of being proud of who you are and where you come from. Therein lies a generational message across time that speaks with love to those living and those yet to come that not all is lost when you know where home is.
