About
dancing lights is a pair of two short movements, each inspired by different ideas or phenomenon. The first movement takes its inspiration from the aurora commonly known as the northern (and southern) lights. I was particularly fascinated in the way that this phenomenon often bursts into being from nothing, illuminating the sky with its bright colours and movement; full of colour and energy, but at the same time, unpredictable and irregular.
The second movement takes its inspiration from fireworks, a completely different type of light, experienced only several times a year. However, rather than taking inspiration from actual fireworks, I conceived this movement imagining the origin of the day we know as Guy Fawkes day with the Gunpowder plot in 1604. It begins with a slow and dark march which is slowly twisted, depicting the fate of Guy, with a surprising fiery finish to the movement.
