About
Pour Espérance came about as a gift for my younger sister on her birthday. The cello, she said, was her favourite instrument, so I wanted to write her a piece for solo cello. I found myself on the train home with no music yet. In the twenty minutes that followed, in the time to train from New Lynn to Sunnyvale and walk to my house, I had set down this piece, a frantic frottage of pencil and manuscript. It is what came to mind instantly when I thought of Hope - her freshness, her thoughtfulness, her dancing. Espérance is what I call her, the French translation of "hope".
