About
Philipp Nicolai (156-1608) was a German Lutheran pastor, poet and composer, and was responsible for many hymns which are still widely used. Along with Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme (Sleepers Wake), this is one of his best-known hymn texts. The English version is used here, the one most widely used is an amalgam of two translations, and includes only three verses. The original German text has seven!
