About

Journeys was written in 2015 after beginning my study of historical keyboards at Te Kōki NZSM. The title makes reference to many types of journeys – both mental and physical. Studying music at a university is a journey in itself.

Whilst writing this piece I became engrossed in Gao Xingjian’s novel Soul Mountain in which the unnamed main character journeys into the rural wilderness of China. This piece is certainly not a musical representation of the story but more a reflection on my own journeys and those in this great novel.

In this piece, I explore sound-silence relationships and the use of iridescence to give each section its own distinctive feeling. Movement or lack of, gives meaning to journeying and its constant stopping and starting. I have tried to reflect that within the piece.
