About
Devised by Gillian Whitehead (composer) and Carol Brown (choreographer) in collaboration with eight exceptional performers, dramaturge Fiona Graham, photographer Solomon Mortimer and performance designer KasiaPol, out the window breath bone feather inhabits a world of shifting forces and hard edges on the brink of change.
An ambulatory performance created for the iconic Pah Homestead, the audience is led on a journey inside and outside the house. Resonating with hidden histories while riffing on the present, the performers combine original music, dance, sung and spoken text in a boundary‐blurring event. Leaning into the edge of the crater and singing into the cracks of the house, stories are projected and invented, memories kindled. Far away, lifted high above the city, the house becomes a site of changing fortunes.
This performance is the culmination of Gillian Whitehead’s three‐month University of Otago Wallace Residency at the Pah Homestead.
Commissioned note
Commissioned with funding from Creative New Zealand, and supported by Carol Brown’s research award through the University of Auckland NICAI’s Faculty Research and Development Fund.
