Prelude is in the standard broken chord toccata style, and the fugue in 4 part follows the traditional style of a Baroque Fugue. It was written for an organist who performs around the world and was keen to have a piece of music with a New Zealand connection. Hence the 'Patriotic' element, the fugal subject comprises the penultimate phrase of the New Zealand National Anthem.
