About
An Advent Prelude was written for Richard Apperley in December 2009. It was written immediately after Lullay My Liking, a carol for the Wellington Cathedral of St Paul's Nine Lessons and Carols Service, from which it draws both musical and emotional inspiration. The work is designed to be played at the beginning of Advent, and marks the reflection and mystery associated with the Advent season.
An Advent Prelude was an attempt at writing a piece that doesn't take the listener on a journey – rather, it leaves them suspended in time. The harmony centres only around a few chordal progressions, with the interest in the changing timbres created by different combinations of stops.
