About
Muriranga-whenua is a flute duet that was composed for 'Wahine Toa', a dance theatre celebration of Maori female ancestral figures, which was performed at Taki Rua Theatre in Wellington in 1992 and in Christchurch in 1993.
The dance's theme is the transferral of wisdom from the old to the young. In particular, the dance focuses on the Maori legend about the old woman, Muriranga-whenua, and the younger, sometimes mischevious Maui. Wahine Toa was choreographed by Keri Kaa, Jan Bolwell and Sunny Amey, commissioned with assistance from the Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council of New Zealand (now Creative New Zealand).
