About
An early passion for cricket was nudged aside by compositional exploration, with piano improvisation an important gateway. Philip studied music at Canterbury University at a time when composition wasn’t formally taught there (though he did participate in some rather interesting composition classes with John Cousins).
Musical examples used as illustrations of Philip’s output are his Earthquake: 22.2.11 and When Gravity Fails.
The Baby Boomer Composer interview series was produced in partnership with the New Zealand School of Music.
Filmed and edited by Chris Watson for the Resound Project (funded by NZ On Air).Audio recorded by Graham Kennedy.
