Young Musicians Foundation concert

Tthe 14th Young Artists Concert, organised by the Michael Monaghan Young Musicians Foundation gives eight of the Wellington region's brightest young musical stars the opportunity to play a concerto movement with full orchestral accompaniment.

Usually students have to content themselves with playing concertos accompanied just by piano, so the chance to experience the work as it is meant to be is a tremendous musical 'boost'. This year the audience will be treated to eight movements from concertos for flute, violin, cello and piano from Ritchie, Ravel and Kabelevsky to Dvorak. Ben Pinkney will perform the first movement of "Anthony Ritchie's Viola Concerto":

The accompanying orchestra is made up of professional players from the NZSO, Vector Wellington and freelancers, conducted by Peter van Drimmelen and Kenneth Young. "I am indebted to Ken and my colleagues in the NZSO," Peter says, "who have voluntarily given up their time and talent to accompany these young soloists. The Michael Monaghan Foundation was formed to honour the memory of a wonderful player in the NZSO, and I am confident that the future of the concerts is secure and will go on from strength to strength - a fitting tribute to Michael."
