Nathanael Dejong

Composer

Born: 1988

Biography

Nathanael is a classically trained violinist and pianist who developed an interest in music composition during his early teens. He studied privately under Sir William Southgate before embarking in tertiary study at the University of Canterbury majoring in violin performance and composition. Upon receiving a full scholarship from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, Nathanael went to Singapore to pursue a direct-honours degree in music composition under Prof. Ho Chee Kong. In his final year he became disillusioned with the state of classical art-music and returned to New Zealand where he joined the Police in his home city of Christchurch.

Nathanael worked for NZ Police as an Authorized Officer in the Crime Reporting Unit conducting victim interviews, in Custodial Management doing processing, risk assessment and mitigation, and in Police escort and judicial security roles. In 2020 Nathanael resigned from the police so his wife could further her nursing career.

In 2021 Nathanael came full circle and returned to the University of Canterbury studying New Music with Reuben de Lautour. He is passionate about conceptual music which is inspired by his children’s play and development.

Nathanael currently works for St John Ambulance as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher.
