Callum Blackmore



Callum Blackmore is an Alumni of the University of Auckland School of Music where he studied composition, vocal performance and musicology. Before beginning his tertiary studies he was awarded the New Zealand Top Scholar Award for NCEA Music in 2012. He won first prize in the APO Secondary School Composers Competition with a piece entitled An Automated Existence while studying at Selwyn College and has twice been a finalist in the NZSO Todd Corporation Young Composer Awards.

In 2013 he won first prize in the Australia New Zealand Viola Society Composition Competition, with his piece After the Storm Will Come a Sleep. Love Thy Neighbour was work-shopped and fully staged by Opera Factory in Auckland. He has been a regular singer at Opera Factory over the last 7 years and has also been in several NBR New Zealand Opera productions. Other performance accolades include an award in the 2013 Lilburn Composition Prize, performing his own vocal monodrama The Ghost Sonata, and the Best Actor award in the 2013 Short and Sweet festival. In 2015 he was awarded a University of Auckland Summer Scholarship to undertake research into music and sound in cinema. Recently, he has been musical director and composer for two adaptations of Shakespeare plays at Auckland’s Pop-up Globe Theatre and in 2017 he had his first foray into the world of composing for film, scoring the short film Therese (Gorjan Markovski).
