Biography

Ian Donald McDonald was a composer, lecturer and writer. He was born in Wellington in 1937 and educated at St Patricks College. He studied composition at Victoria University of Wellington as a student of Douglas Lilburn, David Farquhar and Jenny McLeod, graduating with a BMus in 1967, BMus (hons) in 1968 and MMus in 1969.

McDonald was the University of Otago's Mozart Fellow in 1978 and 1979, where he studied computer composition. In 1983 he served as Chairperson of Chingford Stables Arts Workshop and as a trustee of Fortune Theatre and was also a member of the Dunedin Civic Arts Council.

In the 1990s, he served as trustee and tutor in New Maori Music at Te Awhina Marae and was also a Chairperson at Te Awhina Kokiri, kaituhituhi mo Te Runanganui O Te Tau Ihu O Te Waka A Maui.
