About
synapse:
also called a neuronal junction, a synapse is the site of transmission of electric nerve impulses between two nerve cells (neurons) or between a neuron and a gland or muscle cell. These play a crucial role in human memory.
Like the firing of an electric nerve impulse between two objects, 'synapse' explores the synchronicity and opposition between the violin and marimba - two instruments with radically differing approaches to gesture, and sound production.
The piece is catalysed by electric points of contact between the two instruments, and across the piece, the instruments gradually begin to exchange their identities, snapping into synchronicity before ultimately disintegrating.
Winding through passages of incisive energy and muscularity, the work snaps into a final, dream-like passage where the work's previously visceral material is transformed into free, rippling harmonics. Lines lead through the body of the violin, amplified by the marimba, the body of which is now bowed, transmuting the duo into a single voice that is both liminal and luminous, like the threads of a memory.
