About
The ‘ensemble’ of this work refers to the scientific notion of a collection of states that can co-exist. It also draws on the composer’s need to explore the counterfactual of the “road not taken” (in Victoria’s case, the decision to take up the oboe and not the French horn as a child, having wanted originally to learn the violin). Each player represents an “ensemble of universes” that Victoria might have lived out had different choices been made. Musically, the application of microtones in the horn part signifies something existing “outside of the universe” of this combination of instruments.
