For this exercise in staccato playing, the ticking of a clock provides the perfect musical motif. For anybody who's ever tred to fix a delicate piece of macinerym you will recognise that sometimes the tiniest adjustment can have unexpected consequences. The piece evokes the intricate workings of a timepiece, cogs and bells and coils - and the playful tinkerings of a clockmaker trying to take the ticking!
