About

The work begins with a simple motif that represents early Gloucester man. The development of the symphony is his journey through the city or through the land now occupied by the city. It is also a journey through time, from Glevum (the Roman garrison) to today’s Gloucester with its frenetic traffic and busy streets. The recent assault on the Cathedral (the main focus and spiritual heart of the city) does not go unnoticed. The ‘Cathedral theme’ appears several times as big, uplifting, parallel chords. The river Severn flows steadily onwards flooding its banks at times and the bells ring out at the very end of the piece with Christe Redemptor Omnium! – submitted on 24/9/18 for the NZ Composer Sessions 2019.
