Klein Fountain is a piece that I wrote for the musicians of Ensemble Intercontemporain at the end of 2020. After a workshop with the ensemble in late December 2020 where I presented relatively finished materials, I found that some of the core materials were in fact not working so well. The piece underwent significant changes in the final month of composition, and was finished through the perpetual night in the weeks over Christmas and New Year's at my sister’s place in Stockholm.
As Salvatore Sciarrino elegantly described it, "the form of the work is post-Einstein" – there is a sense of the non-euclidean in the architecture of the work. The name in fact refers to Felix Klein's bottle, an object representing four spatial dimensions, and the imagination of time flowing as though the water passing through this bottle. My compositional ideas are greatly inspired by Jean-Claude Risset, and I owe a lot of gratitude to Gérard Pesson who helped navigate writing this work.
