About
"E Whiti, E Tohu" Traditional Māori by Morvin Simon Arranged by Nikau Wi Neera and Teaonui McKenzie Performed by Vocal FX, conducted by Nīkau Wi Neera
This waiata honours the two great leaders of the Māori settlement of Parihaka, and their courageous actions in resisting the aggression of the New Zealand colonial government.
The invasion of Parihaka on November 5th, 1881, is one of the darkest moments in Aotearoa’s history. Te Whiti and Tohu's actions of peaceful resistance have seen them recognised as forerunners in the great tradition of non-violence found across the world.
