About

This piece evokes the mid-Atlantic (European and early American), and the title is derived from its lively atmosphere. The time signature gradually changes throughout the movements, shifting from 4/4 to 3/4 then 5/4. The work evokes a sense of a bygone era.

Movement 1 is lush and lively, with an animated folksy character. Movement 2 is playful, but not too pushy. Movement 3 is thick with chords and double stops. The viola gets a solo before the ensemble falls into a dark low hole. The pace lifts in Movement 4, and there is an innocent solo viola dance before a passage of agitation brings the piece to a close.
