About
'Asahi' means 'morning sun' in Japanese. It is the name given to a hot spring area on Green Island, a small island off the south east coast of Taiwan. The island was once noted for its prison housing political prisoners, but is now mainly known as a tourist destination, especially popular with divers. The Japanese occupation of Taiwan in the first half of the twentieth century left a legacy of infrastructure and names in many places, and the many hot springs of Taiwan owe much of their development to this period of occupation.
Asahi was commissioned by St Cuthbert's College (Auckland) at the request of conductor Mark Bennett.
