Composed by the Free Radicals, a Wellington-based art music duo comprised of Jonathan Besser and Ross Harris.
This was the 'line out' call All Black rugby hooker Sean Fitzpatrick used in the 1980s. The piece contains a mixture of audio samples that evoke both sport and war – recordings from a schoolboy soccer game (“shoot, shoot, shoot” and “mark a man”) as well as recordings from an All Black rugby match (from the Millard Stand) at Wellington's Athletic Park, which includes crowd noises and hooters.
The marching at the start is a recording of soldiers at an ANZAC day dawn parade, and there is an excerpt taken from an LP of a Winston McCarthy commentary of a Springbok/All Black rugby match that was fed through an AKS synthesiser. A frenetic guitar (played by Ross) struggles over a backing track of bass and drums. This is a live performance from the ‘Hot Winter Music Series’ at Downstage Theatre in 1988, recorded by Sam Negri on a Sony PCM-501ES Digital Recorder.
