About

In Svetlana Alexievich’s oral history of the Chernobyl disaster (Voices from Chernobyl, 2006), one of her subjects refers to the region’s human survivors as “talking earth”. My work is inspired by the understated, immeasurable resilience of people in co-operation, and scored to showcase the collective assets of an ensemble new to me: the brass band. It is also inspired by musical realisations of resilience, mōteatea in particular.

Talking Earth was composed in residence as Mozart Fellow at the University of Otago, and is dedicated to Wellington Brass.
